At least one SoMa intersection will become safer for cyclists.
The San Francisco Bicycle Coalition recently announced that right-turn enforcement has finally been installed at the intersection of Market and Octavia. This will help catch drivers who decide to make illegal right turns onto the freeway.
The intersection of Market and Octavia is routinely cited as one of the most dangerous intersections in the city. The most common cause of fatal bike and pedestrian accidents at that location are these illegal right runs.
Representatives from the SF Bike Coalition say that they have fought for camera enforcement at this intersection since 2007. Bicycling safety advocates say that they have pounded doors at City Hall and the State Capital to make this happen.
“The Market and Octavia camera is the first right turn enforcement camera in San Francisco, and it took new state legislation and years of our advocacy in order to get it,” the SF Bike Coalition wrote. “We thank Assemblyman Tom Ammiano and the California Bicycle Coalition for their years of commitment in helping move this critical safety improvement forward.”
