The number of defective car recalls has increased since congressional investigations were launched into the decision of General Motors to delay a recall for a decade.
The New York Times reports that the decision of regulators to fine GM about $35 million has prompted a wave of product recalls from other manufacturers.
Ford recently issued a recall of 1.1 million cars in the U.S. due to steering problems, bringing its total number of recalled vehicles to 2.9 million for the year, (significantly above last year’s recall of 1.2 million vehicles.)
Nissan recalled 990,000 U.S. vehicles in March, which is about 30,000 more cars than it recalled last year.
Reports indicated that the majority of the biggest recent recalls involve defects that have been known to manufacturers for years.
Ford told reporters that first received notice of steering problems in its cars in 2009 and failed to issue a recall despite upgrading the steering systems on newer cars. At least six injuries have been related to the steering problem.
