Elderly woman killed on Fillmore Street

A 91-year-old woman was run over and killed on Fillmore Street last week. The SF Streets Blog reports that the crash happened last Thursday as the woman crossed mid-block on the street.

Authorities are declining to charge the driver with a crime or even cite him because the woman was jay-walking.

Oakland settles car accident claim for $2 million

A car accident caused by an Oakland public works employee will wind up costing the city $2 million to settle.

The San Francisco Chronicle reports that the city will settle the lawsuit to avoid an adverse jury verdict in the case.

The lawsuit was brought by Wanning Qian, who hurt when he was hit by a city public works vehicle and sent flying into the glass door of an art gallery. Qian was one of two pedestrians hurt when the van ran a red light at 14th Street and Franklin in September of 2012.

San Francisco Mayor Announces New Safety Initiative, Cycling Community Unimpressed.

Mayor Edwin M. Lee and several other top city officials recently announced a pedestrian safety campaign called “Be Nice, Look Twice.”

The mayor says that in addition to encouraging individuals to be more aware of their surroundings, the SFPD will increase its safety enforcement efforts by bolstering the number of motorcycle cops on city streets.

Northern California slaughterhouse issues massive recall

A Petaluma-based slaughterhouse has issued a massive recall of 8.7 million pounds of meat processed in 2013. The Press Democrat reports that Rancho Feeding Corp. expanded a recall announced last month after an investigation revealed that it proceeded “diseased and unsound animals” without proper inspections.

Dolan Law Firm Sues Uber for Death of Sofia Liu

The Dolan Law Firm recently filed the first lawsuit against Uber cab for the death of 6-year-old Sofia Liu.

Sofia Liu was run over by Syed Muzzaraf along with her mother Huan and brother Anthony. The lawsuit was filed on behalf of Liu’s parents, Ang Jiang and Huan Kuang and has been covered in publications such as PC World.

California Lawmakers Vote to Allow Expedited Jury Trials

The Expedited Jury Trials Act, praised by the plaintiff and defense bars alike, is expected to be signed into law later this month. In an expedited trial, if agreed to by both parties, each side would have three hours to present its case before an eight-member jury. Supporters say the new rules will allow plaintiffs to bring smaller cases that might not otherwise go to court.

The California state legislature has unanimously approved a bill designed to make jury trials faster and easier and to allow more plaintiffs with smaller claims to have their cases heard in court.

Temporary S-Curve of Bridge Dangerous for Drivers

Forty-two crashes in two months time on a single temporary S-curve on San Francisco’s Bay Bridge has led Caltrans to make a steady stream of improvements directed at improving driver safety through providing adequate advanced warning But, in an interesting anomaly, many commuters aren’t up in arms about the dangerous curve. The Contra Costa Times polled 410 readers, 57 percent of whom blamed driver carelessness rather than road design for the crashes.The danger of the S-curve gained notoriety after a November crash in which a truck carrying pears overturned, plummeting 200 feet and killing the driver.

Suit Charges Student Molested By Employee At School For Developmentally Disabled

One San Jose mother recently experienced a parent’s worst nightmare: Her disabled son told her that he was being molested by a school employee and no one would believe him. The mother pulled her son from the school, but her accusations were ignored by both school administrators and the police until she contacted until she contacted attorneys Christopher Dolan and Heather Sweeney of the Dolan Law Firm.

Chris Dolan, owner of The Dolan Law Firm, and Ms. Sweeney are helping the mother take legal action against Achieve Kids, a school for developmentally disabled students. The mother says that her autistic son was molested by a 33-year-old teacher’s aide at the school named Waking Bailey.
