New safety features might help keep California roads safe

One thing that many drivers on the roadways want is for cars to have as many safety features as possible. While it is true that vehicles have come a long way since they were first invented, there is always room for improvement. Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx has recently announced that the safety features under the New Car Assessment Program are expanding.

How Can I Get Out of Jury Duty?

Jury.jpg

Bryan L. From Oakland asks; “How do I get out of jury duty.”

Dear Bryan; seriously, shame on you. Simple answer DON’T. One sure way to get out of being on a jury is to be a criminal defendant- then you don’t have to sit on a jury and, at the same time, you will hope to God that you will have a group of people who didn’t try and evade their civic responsibility who can sit and fairly hear your case and defense. Another way is become a convicted felon and be deprived of your constitutional rights such as bearing arms, being free from unlawful search and seizure and the ability to sit on a jury or vote..

This week’s question comes from Phyllis G. in Marin who asks: “I was reading about the young woman in Oregon with a terminal brain cancer who decided to end her life. Fight against bias in lane splitting motorcycle accidents

Progress In Preventing Drunk Driving Accidents

Criminal and traffic laws are largely laid out on a state level. There are federal criminal laws regarding drugs, fraud and other activities, but when it comes to combating a problem such as drunk driving, each state is free to take its own approach. Some measures, such as establishing a legal drinking age and sobriety limit are left to the states, but are heavily influenced by federal budget maneuvers. Regardless, there is value in taking a local or statewide look at the problem to see what can be done.

Road Design, Speed Limits And Traffic Accidents

The relationship between the speed limit posted on a road, the speed the road was designed to bear and the traffic accidents that occur on the road would surprise most people. The issue of speed is contentious, but important. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration claims that roughly one-third of all accidents are speed related. While that does not mean that those accidents are all caused by drivers who are going too fast, it does mean that rate of speed is a vital factor in many deadly crashes.

Bike accident fatalities are higher than in 1975

Bicycling is an excellent mode of transportation that is environmentally friendly and can provide the cyclist with exercise. This might interest our California readers.

The Future Of Motorcycle Safety

Vehicle-to-vehicle communication technology allows vehicles to transmit data about speed, position and direction to other vehicles. In theory, such technology would allow vehicles to avoid collisions by issuing warnings to drivers or even taking corrective action, such as slowing down, automatically. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has already initiated the first steps in requiring cars SUVs and pickup trucks to come equipped with such technology in the future. Early research has shown that the technology might be effective in protecting motorcycle riders as well.
