$1+ Billion Recovered

Alameda County Safe Routes to Schools held its annual Golden Sneaker Contest from March 4 through March 15. This county-wide classroom competition challenges families to walk, bike, carpool, and take transit to school for two school weeks. The event aims to promote healthy, active, and sustainable modes of transportation among students, parents, teachers, and administrators.

Students and teachers in each class kept track of their travel to school from the day with a simple tally chart or virtual tracker. Qualifying modes of transport included walking, biking, using a wheelchair or mobility device, skateboarding, taking public transit, or carpooling with individuals from other households. At the end of the contest, the class with the highest percentage of active and shared transportation usage received donated Golden State Warrior shoes and new golden shoelaces.

Participation in this event benefits the students, their parents, and the community. Physical fitness is paramount, but fewer cars mean less pollution around schools, buildings, and community residences. Walking or biking also decreases traffic congestion around school neighborhoods. Physical exercise also improves students’ mental well-being. Additionally, the children’s excitement about competing with their peers and other schools increases student attendance.

The Alameda County Safe Routes to Schools (SR2S) Program organizes and supports fun, educational activities for families that encourage physical activity and teach about ways that they can positively impact their community. They hold various events throughout the year, including this year’s Reboot Your Commute HS event from January 29 to March 30, The Golden Sneaker Contest from March 4 through March 15, and Bike to School Day on May 16, 2024. They are a great organization to support. For more information about their program visit them at alamedacountysr2s.org
