Two juveniles and a man in his late-30s died in a motor vehicle crash Tuesday morning at the intersection of Highway 190 and Road 152. Seven other people were injured in the car accident.
Police say the man in his late 30s was heading northbound on Road 152 and failed to stop for a stop sign at the intersection with Highway 190. A van transporting juveniles on probation who had just completed a shift of community service was traveling east on Highway 190. The van, hauling a trailer, reportedly broadsided the Chevrolet in the intersection.
Both vehicles ran off the roadway and came to a rest in a nearby cornfield. Five of the eight people riding in the van were ejected in the crash. Two juveniles who had been ejected suffered fatal injuries.
Emergency responders from the California Highway Patrol, Tulare County Sheriff’s Office and Fire Department arrived at the scene. Responders placed yellow covers over the deceased juvenile’s bodies as crews tended to the scene.
Two juveniles were flown from the crash site to Community Regional Medical Center in Fresno. An additional four juveniles and the driver of the van also suffered major injuries and were transported on the ground to Kaweah Delta Medical Center in Visalia for treatment. The driver of the Chevrolet did not survive the car accident.
The juveniles reportedly had been performing community work service while on probation. The van was returning to the Porterville probation office when the car accident occurred.
The Chevrolet truck involved in the accident is owned by a tire service company. The Porterville Recorder does not indicate whether the driver was working at the time of the accident. The California Highway Patrol says drugs or alcohol were not involved in the accident.
