SUMMARY

A 25-year-old San Francisco man was recently killed in a Potrero Hill neighborhood motorcycle accident. NBC San Francisco reports that the motorcyclist was fatally injured on Saturday when he collided with a van on Cesar Chavez Street near Evans Avenue.

The head-on collision occurred shortly before 9 a.m. and authorities are still investigating the cause of the crash. Emergency crews pronounced the young driver dead at the scene. Authorities say that the van driver stayed at the scene of the accident and cooperated with the investigation. It is unclear who crossed the center line of the road or whether any charges will be filed in connection with this crash.

There are many causes of head-on motorcycle accidents including driver distraction and road defects. Car drivers distracted by passengers or mobile devices are most likely to slide into oncoming traffic and kill motorcyclists. Distracted driving is not as common among motorcyclists, but bikers frequently cause head-on accidents after failing to negotiate poor road conditions such as large pot holes or loose gravel.

Fatal motorcycle crashes are common throughout the year in Northern California. In our last post we discussed two fatal Merced County crashes, including one that was caused by a truck which negligently backed into the path of oncoming motorcyclists.
