This week’s question comes from a bicycle coalition member from the Bay Area who asks:
“Why are cycling accidents increasing in California, and how can cyclists protect themselves?”
Each year, more Californians take to the streets on bicycles for fitness, eco-conscious living, and faster commutes. But with this rise in ridership comes a disturbing trend: cycling accidents are increasing at alarming rates across the state and nation.
While cycling promotes health and sustainability, the reality is that many roads remain dangerous for cyclists. The lack of protected bike lanes, distracted driving, speeding vehicles, and poor road maintenance all contribute to a growing number of collisions. Cyclists are often forced to share space with cars, increasing their vulnerability.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) reported 966 cyclist deaths in 2021, the highest since 1975. Injuries rose to over 41,000 that same year, showing a 7% increase from 2020. Data further reveals that between 2017 and 2021, an average of 2.7 fatal crashes occurred per million U.S. residents, with more than half of all deaths occurring in just five states, including California.
So, what can cyclists do to stay safe?
- Always wear a helmet to reduce the risk of head trauma.
- Use reflective clothing and lights to increase visibility, especially at dawn or dusk.
- Follow traffic laws and signals just as vehicles do.
- Ride defensively, always anticipating the unexpected.
- Maintain your bike by checking brakes, tires, and lights regularly.
- Choose safer routes, ideally with protected bike lanes or low-traffic streets.
Despite following all safety measures, accidents can and do still happen, especially when negligence is involved. If you’re injured in a crash, it’s important to speak with a qualified attorney. A bike accident lawyer can help you recover compensation for medical bills, lost income, and emotional distress.
